Summer Solstice (What You Want To Know Wednesdays)

Tomorrow, June 21, is the 2018 summer Solstice, also the longest day of the year for the Northern Hemisphere and the shortest day of the year for the Southern Hemisphere. Although, there was record heat during the last week of spring, summer does not officially begin until tomorrow.  For the Southern Hemisphere it also marks the beginning of winter. A solstice happens at the same time for all of Earth.

What is a solstice? Ancient cultures knew the sun’s path across the sky, the length of daylight, and the location of the sunrise and sunset shifted through the year. They built monuments, like Stonehenge to track the progress. At the June solstice, the earth is positioned so that the North Pole is leaning most towards the sun. Here are some fun ways to bring in the Summer solstice:

  1. Add Summer décor to your home – The first day of summer is a great time to spruce up your home with brightly colored summer décor.

  2. Have a solstice feast – Invite your friends and family over for a feast to celebrate summer.

  3. Throw a block party – Take your feast one-step further and have a block party.

  4. Attend a bon fire – Warm summer nights are the perfect time to make s’mores and celebrate summer.

  5. Seasonal crafts – Crafts are a great way to bring in the summer. Here is a fun way to make a human sundial.

Don’t forget the SPF!
